Area of effect

An area of effect, or AoE, reaches multiple targets in a zone instead of hitting just one.

A well-placed ability can swing a teamfight. Spreading out reduces the chance that one hit catches the whole team.

Total damage can rise without increasing pressure on one specific target; the two effects should be distinguished.
